Dr. Shaw’s training in fixed prosthodontics regarding full-mouth reconstruction affords patients who needs extensive restoration of teeth the ability to regain lost space. This space is important because it is needed to restore teeth to the most desirable form and function for each patient.

Loss of vertical dimension means that there is a closing down of the patient’s bite. This can occur for several reasons including excessive wear on teeth from clenching or grinding, loss of teeth and shifting of teeth over time. There are techniques to properly regain the lost vertical height and restore all of the teeth to a more desirable shape, which is more efficient functionally and more esthetically pleasing.

The diagnostic phase of a patient’s treatment gives the patient a visual snapshot of the proposed treatment through a diagnostic wax-up, which is a three-dimensional representation of the proposed treatment. By allowing the patient to see what their final restorations will look like and the biomaterials that will be used to make the restorations before we even start treatment, we can ensure that the patient expectation is more likely met. This wax-up will be used as the template for the temporization phase of treatment while the work is accomplished in our in-house lab. The patient will be able to wear these temporary restorations and become accustomed to regaining their vertical height.

The benefit to allowing the patient to see and even wear the temporary versions of their restorations ensures that when it comes time to seat the permanent restorations we already know that the patient will be happy with the overall look, fit and feel of their new full-mouth restorations.
